Vitamin C for Gout Relief

Research has shown that Vitamin C along in combination with bromelain can help prevent gout.

If you are suffering with gout, you may have heard that vitamin C works as a natural aid for reducing your pain. However, a new study has found that vitamin C alone will not do the trick.

At Western Herbal and Nutrition, professionals have been successful in combining pineapple extract, which is full of vitamin C, with bromelain - an anti-inflammatory agent. Western Herbal has worked to create the best mixture to provide lower uric acid levels and reduced inflammation to individuals suffering from gout.

A study of vitamin C

Vitamin C may have a positive effect for gout developments according to the Arthritis Research Centre of Canada's study. For a twenty year period, researchers examined the relationship between vitamin C intake and incidents of gout suffered by over 45,000 males. None of the participants had a history of gout upon starting the study. The men completed questionnaires to assess any gout occurrences based on the American College of Rheumatology's criteria. Every four years, the study subjects completed another questionnaire to track their intake of vitamin C.

What they found

There had been 1,317 confirmed cases of gout by the study's 20 year follow-up in 2006. Male study participants who had higher levels of vitamin C intake experienced gout much less often than those who consumed less of the vitamin. There were also signs that vitamin C supplements may have aided in gout prevention among participants, as well. Those who did not use supplemental vitamin C had a much higher chance of developing gout. However, researchers concluded that vitamin C will not provide the necessary results to prevent gout flares.

Cherries

Some trials have shown that regularly consuming cherry juice concentrate may aid in the prevention of gout episodes. However, research did not produce evidence to support the use of cherry juice for individuals suffering acute attacks.
