Grilling with Gout

Make sure a gout attack does not interfere with your next barbeque.

Do you notice an increase of gout occurrences when the weather warms up?

As the "disease of kings," you may be able to associate your advanced risk to a more indulgent lifestyle. If you're spending time in backyards and parks barbecuing with your friends and family members, there's a good chance you're also putting healthy-eating options to the wayside.

Keep in Mind

Many people enjoy an ice cold beer or frozen cocktail alongside their red-meat burger or shrimp skewer. All of these menu items, however, prompt a build up of uric acid in a gout sufferer. Of course you'll want to keep track of your diet year-round if you are at risk of flare ups, but you may want to pay special attention under the heat of the summer sun.

Opt for all vegetable skewers, chicken sausages and BBQ chicken breasts over a burger or steak during this year's Independence Day cookouts. Although seafood can provide other health benefits, if you are at risk for gout, you'll want to reduce your intake. Limiting your alcohol consumption is always a good idea when maintaining healthy-living options, plus it may help you avoid dehydration during a day in the heat. You're bound to drink more to help your body cool off under the sun, so incorporate some water into the mix. For every cocktail, beer or glass of chilled wine you drink, have two glasses of water. When you are considering an alcoholic beverage, keep in mind that beer is the number one option to avoid.

Try This Tasty Recipe

If you're looking for a tasty recipe to try out at your next barbecue, try out this popular chicken sausage with charred pepper and onion dish from Fitness Magazine:

8 3-ounce fully cooked Italian-flavored chicken sausages grilling-with-gout.jpg
2 large red onions
2 medium bell peppers
2 medium yellow peppers
2 garlic cloves, minced
2 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil
2 tablespoons balsamic vinegar
2 tablespoons slivered fresh basil
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon black pepper

Before you head out to the grill, seed all of the peppers and quarter them lengthwise. You'll also want to keep the root end intact on your onions and then cut them into eight wedges. Once your grill is heated to medium, coat it with cooking spray before throwing the peppers and onions on for 12 to 15 minutes. Turn the veggies two or three times until they are evenly charred and tender.

Mix together your olive oil, vinegar, garlic, salt and pepper in a bowl and then toss the veggies and basil in this combination. It will take about 10 minutes for the sausages to be warmed through on the grill. Once you have some nice grill marks, pull them off and slice each one up. Serve on a large platter or individual plates with the peppers and onions.

Maintaining a healthy diet in addition to using the Gout-Relief supplement may prevent you from suffering unwanted pain this summer.
